Cristina Şomcutean: GO Forschung-Award
22/12/2025
We are proud to announce that this year’s GO Forschung-Award was presented to our former master’s student Cristina Şomcutean for her outstanding master’s thesis, “Queering the Center of Machine Learning: Lifting the Veil of Objectivity and Conceptualizing Research Beyond the Deep Learning Paradigm.”
The GO Forschung-Award is presented annually to the best student thesis at the University of Bayreuth that qualifies its author for doctoral studies. In her thesis, Cristina critically examines the assumption of objectivity in machine learning research, showing how value judgments and entrenched commitments to deep learning models contribute to social and environmental harm. Drawing on queer theory and feminist philosophy of science, she proposes rethinking dominant paradigms in ML in order to imagine research practices that are more reflective, inclusive, and less harmful.
