Seminar Announcement: Silicon Valley Ideology
16/10/2025
Voices that warn about AI posing an existential risk to humanity are getting louder - but so are technooptimists, who want to supercharge our path towards the age of automation without any restrictions. But what, exactly, do big tech CEOs think about what a desirable future looks like - what are their philosophical background assumptions, and what is their political vision of how to get us there?
Professor Annette Zimmermann will be teaching a block seminar on important recent shifts in the philosophical background commitments and the political ideologies articulated by tech industry leaders (longtermism, right-libertarianism, accelerationism and others), as well as their connection to the larger-scale economic context of the contemporary AI market (oligopoly power, AI arms race, antitrust, deployment moratoria, global competition).
You can read a recent interview (German) with Professor Zimmermann about
her current research interests in the political philosophy of AI here: https://www.sueddeutsche.de/politik/kuenstliche-intelligenz-gefahren-2035-regulierung-europa-big-tech-interview-li.3277793?reduced=true
